Exceptional 1863 Victorian crystal box set with ornate .925 sterling silver lids by Pittway Brothers of London.

A beautiful and unusual matched set of Victorian crystal boxes with fully hallmarked sterling silver lids, made by Pittway Brothers of London, England in 1863. More than 160 years old, this set combines substantial clear crystal bases with intricately worked sterling silver covers, creating an elegant example of mid-Victorian English silver craftsmanship.

The sterling lids feature elaborate pierced and engraved decoration, allowing the crystal beneath to show through the openwork design. The difference in size makes the two boxes particularly attractive displayed together and suggests they were intended as complementary dressing-table, vanity or trinket boxes rather than two identical containers.

Most importantly, the sterling silver lids retain a complete set of British hallmarks that authenticate their maker, origin, silver standard, and date: I.P over W.P for John & William Pittway (Pittway Brothers), the crowned leopard’s head for London, lion passant for sterling silver, lowercase “h” date letter for 1863, and Queen Victoria duty head. Together, these marks firmly establish the set as genuine London-made Victorian sterling silver dating to 1863.

Condition Report: Very good antique condition with no monograms. The sterling silver retains beautiful, crisp decorative detail with light surface scratches. Both crystal boxes show minor surface wear, and the smaller box displays minor chips/fleabites to the corner edges, consistent with its 163 years of age.
