Some antiques survive… Others become heirlooms. This remarkable vase has accomplished both.

An exquisite antique Royal Vienna style porcelain portrait vase, dating approximately to the late 19th to early 20th century, c.1900, featuring a beautifully hand-painted portrait identified on the underside as “Pompadour.”

The subject is Madame de Pompadour (Jeanne Antoinette Poisson, 1721–1764), the celebrated member of the French court who became the official chief mistress of King Louis XV in 1745 and was an influential patron of the decorative arts.

The finely rendered portrait is signed “Wagner” at the lower edge and depicts Madame de Pompadour delicately holding a flower. Her softly modeled features, blue drapery and floral adornments are framed by exceptionally rich decoration.

The porcelain body features a deep burgundy ground lavishly embellished with gilt floral, foliate and geometric motifs, raised gilt accents and delicate beaded detailing. Broad bands of brilliant gold encircle the body, creating a striking contrast with the portrait and rich burgundy ground.

Measurements: 6" high × approximately 4 1/2" diameter

Marks & Identification: The hand-painted portrait is signed “Wagner” at the lower edge. The underside bears a blue underglaze shield/beehive-style mark and is hand-inscribed “Pompadour,” “Dec. 603” and “Déposé,” together with additional hand-painted production/decorator numbers, including 5518. These markings are consistent in format with other documented Wagner-signed Royal Vienna-style portrait porcelains of the period.

Condition Report: Very good antique condition with no chips, cracks or crazing observed. Light age-appropriate surface wear and some minor losses to small gilt accents are present, but nothing that significantly detracts from the overall appearance.
