Late Victorian Parnall & Sons Bristol 10 KG shop balance scale with brass pans

Some antiques survive… Others become heirlooms. This remarkable scale has accomplished both.

An authentic late Victorian Parnall & Sons commercial balance scale, dating approximately to the 1880s. Crafted in heavy cast iron with an aged green-painted finish, the scale retains two substantial brass pans and wonderful character from more than a century of use.

The round pan is stamped “PARNALL & SONS / 21 & 22 NARROW WINE ST / BRISTOL,” notably bearing the firm's earlier name without the “Ltd.” designation adopted following incorporation in 1889. The scale body is also cast PARNALL and 10 KG, supporting its history as an English commercial shop scale.

The balance mechanism was tested and is working. Equal independently weighed 10 oz. test loads placed in opposing pans brought the scale to level balance. A wonderful piece of Victorian English commercial history and a striking decorative accent for a kitchen, shop, restaurant or collection.
