We are pleased to present this exceptional and monumental antique English Victorian silver-plated epergne centerpiece, dating to the late 19th century (circa 1891). This impressive showpiece is richly adorned with naturalistic grape clusters, scrolling vine arms, and lush foliage decoration, and is further enhanced by two charming climbing cherub figures, symbolizing abundance and celebration.
The epergne is surmounted by a cut glass dish set within a reticulated holder, rising from a boldly modeled central standard. From the stem issue three detachable S-form vine branch arms, each individually numbered, which divide to hold two bowls each. These bowls may be used decoratively or adapted for candles. The arms may also be removed, allowing the piece to be displayed as a striking tall tazza-form centerpiece.
The substantial base bears a reserved engraved presentation inscription: “A LEGACY FROM F. BAYLY ESQUIRE 1891” and rests on three elegant, scrolled feet, one impressed with the number “2466.”
Dimensions:
• Height: 29 inches (excluding glass dish)
• Width: 20 inches (maximum arm span)
Markings:
Impressed initials “ES” appear on all three arms and at the arm junction on the central standard. While the exact silversmith has not been conclusively identified, possible makers associated with these initials during the period include Edward Smith, Edward Sweet, or Edward Stammers.
Condition Report:
Very good antique condition with minor surface wear consistent with age and normal use. One of the cupid (cherub) figures is loose but remains stable and displays beautifully as-is. No other significant damage observed. Please review all photos carefully, as they depict the exact item you will receive. We never use stock photography.
