Helena Wolfsohn • Dresden, Germany • c.1880 • Crown D Mark
Hand-painted harbor scenes • Polychrome florals • Extensive gilding • Sculptural rose finial

Some antiques survive… Others become heirlooms. This remarkable piece has accomplished both.

An exceptional antique Dresden porcelain covered bowl by the Helena Wolfsohn decorating workshop, dating to approximately 1880 and richly decorated with hand-painted European harbor scenes, colorful floral sprays and extensive gilding.

The substantial rounded bowl features multiple scenic reserves depicting sailing vessels, figures, waterfront architecture and distant landscapes, each framed by elaborate gilt and polychrome ornamentation. Delicate hand-painted flowers and foliage fill the surrounding porcelain, while intricate gilded borders encircle both the bowl and domed lid.

Especially striking is the sculptural porcelain rose finial, richly highlighted in gold with an applied stem and leaves extending across the lid. The combination of detailed scenic painting, vibrant floral decoration and lavish gilding gives the piece an impressive presence from every angle.

The underside bears the underglaze blue Crown D mark associated with the Helena Wolfsohn Dresden decorating workshop. Based upon the mark, decoration and documented period of production, this piece dates to approximately 1880. The Wolfsohn workshop became known for richly decorated porcelain inspired by earlier Meissen and European court porcelain traditions.
